As a former inner city middle school teacher, I can't help but imagine how much good an organization like Girls for a Change would have done for my former students. I would spend hours listening to my young students lament about their problems at home and in their neighborhoods; they were old enough to recognize the changes that needed to be made in their neighborhoods and passionate enough to want to make something happen, but also not yet at a point where they understood how they personally could actually affect change and make a difference. This is exactly the gap that Girls for a Change could help young women bridge.
Thanks to Girls for a Change:
Every year thousands of girls learn how to tackle community problems such as gang violence, low self-esteem, and environmental degradation. Imagine the possibilities if every year thousands of middle school and high school girls learn how to tackle community problems. Picture the huge number of powerful women leaders driving local communities and the world toward success and well-being.
When I think of my impressionable former students, I know that Girls for a Change is reaching out to girls at exactly the right time. With the drama and tragedies that these young women are exposed to, I know how hard it is to inspire girls to not only overcome obstacles but also to teach them to help others to do the same. Middle school and high school is, in my opinion, the ultimate time to build confidence, positive relationships, and key problem solving strategies.
