***For My Children: A Mother’s Journal of Memories, Wishes, and Wisdom is a beautiful and unique way for you - or a special mama in your life - to pass down her life story. This book's thought provoking prompts has reminded me of how much I still want to learn about my own mother, as well as how much the intricacies of my own life will matter to my children. I love the fill in the blank prompts because it makes the process of sharing something seemingly immeasurable not only possible, but actually fairly simple. The author, Dionna Ford of Code Name: Mama, Nursing Freedom, and Natural Parents Network, clearly cherishes the awe-inspiring complexity of motherhood as she lovingly gives mamas a hand in sharing their own voices with their children.
For My Children is the kind of journal that you want to spend time with. The illustrations and colors are so lovely, and it would be a gorgeous holiday gift for your mama or someone who has been like a mother to you. The prompts are really designed for a woman with grown children to look back and reflect on her life as a woman before her children were born as well as what life was like throughout years of mothering.
This is a journal that I want to keep by my bedside and fill in little by little throughout my children's lives. It's a project that you can work on over many years as a young mama, although I have to warn you that this is a project that may stretch out over a very long time as the prompts fill you with nostalgia and inspire you to take on additional sentimental projects. How could you not lose yourself in dreamy thoughts and new inspirations when sharing the stories of your first broken heart, the lessons you've learned from your children, or what fictional characters you would compare your family members to?

As I began spending time with this journal, I couldn't help but think how relationships between mothers and grown children might grow and develop through the kind of interactive communication that For My Children inspires. What a gift it is for a child to see her mother for who she really is - as a multi-dimensional person who has an entire legacy to pass down!
